One to Watch

I was reading Architectural Digests Interior Designers to watch for 2013 and loved the work of Lauren Geremia.

When the young founders of Instagram, the photo-sharing app, needed to design their San Francisco offices, they turned to another budding Bay Area entrepreneur: decorator Lauren Geremia. She had moved west after getting a painting degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and worked on interiors for several hip restaurants and bars, beginning with the urban-rustic sushi hot spot Umami. Establishing Geremia Design in 2010, she quickly became a favorite of the start-up set, with clients like Instagram and the file-hosting service Dropbox—which enlisted her to outfit its 89,000-square-foot headquarters—leading to a growing number of residential projects for newly minted tech titans. Geremia’s unconventional elements, whether a display of 900 paper airplanes stuck into a wall or an installation of tinted Ping-Pong balls sandwiched between sheets of glass, resonate with Silicon Valley’s work-hard–play-hard mentality. Geremia custom creates much of the furniture and art for her clients, and she is now developing a line of lighting. “I love curating talent, coming up with concepts, and editing ideas,” she says. “And then making them work for someone else.”

Here is some of her work via her website
